How Can I Help?

Why do I have to be 13+? Because U.S. law prohibits kids under 13 from using the internet for certain things, and HIV can be a controversial subject.

1. Send us the HIV data and/or training materials you were most recently given. If there is a piece of data you're reluctant to share with us, you may explain why, but do not omit it. There is no need to send us the U.S. federal data available through the CDC and HIV.gov. Please specify:

   • The jurisdiction the data/materials apply to

   • Whether the materials may be reproduced for noncommercial use

   • Whether the materials are confidential

   • Your role

   • Whether you are interested in discussing the data with a volunteer

2. Share suggestions for ways to improve compliance with HIV best practices, either in your field, or in your community at large. Share these suggestions with:

   • Professional bodies you belong to

   • Local HIV organizations and advocacy groups. If you don't know who they are, call your state HIV hotline and ask. You can also use the AIDS service locator. Many local HIV organizations will happily connect you to political and professional bodies who might be interested in what you have to say. They may also know of local advocacy groups that are working on your area of concern.

   • Your local school board

   • Your state and local health departments

   • Us

We are looking to translate our Transmission, Prevention, and Stigma materials into as many languages as possible for use in the USA and around the world.

Qualifications:

• Fluent speaker: Both English AND whichever language you’re translating into. You do not need to be a native speaker.

• Team player: Willing to work with others to ensure accuracy.

• Responsible: Make deadlines and occasionally talk to other volunteers on the phone/online.

• Honest: Ask questions if you’re not sure about something.

• Willing to learn: You do NOT have to be an HIV expert to help, but you DO have to accept medical facts about HIV.

• Any age 13+: We care about fluency and responsibility, not your age. These materials were developed with help from teenagers and retirees alike, and we believe people of all ages can do good work.

The translations we most need are Arabic, Chinese, French (and Haitian Creole), German, Hindi, Korean, Russian, Tagalog, and Vietnamese. If you are a fluent speaker and would like to help, send us an email with "Volunteer Translator" in the subject line.
